🇫🇷 Significance of the French cornflower (Bleuet de France):
-
National remembrance flower: In France, the cornflower serves a similar role to the red poppy in the UK and Commonwealth.
-
Origins: After the First World War, two nurses (Suzanne Lenhardt and Charlotte Malleterre) began making blue cornflower badges to help raise money for injured soldiers and war widows. The blue was chosen because:
-
It’s one of France’s national colours.
-
“Bleuets” was also a nickname for the young French conscripts in their new blue uniforms during WWI.
-
-
Symbolism:
-
Memory and tribute to those who died for France.
-
Solidarity and support for veterans, war widows, and orphans.
-
Hope and renewal, as the cornflower grows again in fields devastated by war.
-
-
Today: The Bleuet is sold around 11 November (Armistice Day) and 8 May (Victory in Europe Day) in France. Funds go to support veterans, victims of war, and victims of terrorism.
👉 So, while the UK and USA use the red poppy, the French use the blue cornflower as their emblem of remembrance.
