The LGBTQ+ poppy (sometimes called the rainbow poppy) is a more recent and unofficial remembrance symbol.
π What it represents:
-
It is intended to honour and recognise the service and sacrifices of LGBTQ+ people in the armed forces, both past and present.
-
It also highlights the persecution many faced β for example, during and after the World Wars, when LGBTQ+ personnel often had to serve in silence and were sometimes criminalised despite their service.
π‘ Use today:
-
Some LGBTQ+ groups and individuals wear rainbow poppies during Remembrance to celebrate diversity and make sure queer contributions and sacrifices are not forgotten.
-
Others choose to wear the red poppy and mark remembrance in more traditional ways, while still campaigning for visibility of LGBTQ+ veterans.
In short: the rainbow/LGBTQ+ poppy is an unofficial, community-driven symbol that says βwe remember them tooβ β ensuring remembrance includes LGBTQ+ service members who were often hidden in history.
