The purple poppy is worn to remember animals that served and died in war.
-
Origins: The tradition began in 2006, introduced by the charity Animal Aid, to highlight the often overlooked role of animals in military conflicts.
-
Animals commemorated: Horses, mules, donkeys, dogs, pigeons, camels, and even elephants were used to transport supplies, deliver messages, detect explosives, and provide companionship. Many suffered injury or death in service.
-
Symbolism: The purple colour was chosen to distinguish it from the red poppy (for human soldiers) while still linking it to the wider act of remembrance.
-
Today:
-
Some wear the purple poppy alongside the red to show respect for both humans and animals.
-
Others prefer a combined symbol, like the Poppy Appeal’s poppy with paw print, to avoid confusion with rival charities.
-
So, the purple poppy ensures that the sacrifice and contribution of animals in conflict are not forgotten, standing as a reminder that war impacts all living beings, not just people.
